Future Vlogger
We’ve been on Kiera about what she watches on YouTube. Now, before you panic, let me explain. She doesn’t watch inappropriate things on YouTube. It’s more that she wants to watch vloggers.
If you aren’t familiar with that word, it’s ok. A vlogger is someone who videos their life… kind of like a blog but with video.
The ones that she watches are family-oriented and we are ok with that. But, she tends to want to watch them all the time. One day, when it was during her television time, I actually asked this of my child. “Don’t you want to watch a cartoon?”
As a family, we have come to a compromise. She is allowed to watch the family vloggers but she also has to watch educational videos.
Several nights ago, after watching a science experiment on YouTube, she ran in the kitchen, pulled an egg out of the refrigerator and asked, “Where is the vinegar?”
Turning away from the stove, I looked at her and asked the only thing I could think of. “Why?”
I remember a couple of years ago, when Kiera was smaller. She used to ask “why?” all the time. Now, our roles are reversed. It feels like I am constantly asking “why?”
“Because, you are supposed to put an egg in a cup of vinegar for 24 hours and then it bounces!” She excitedly explained. Once she explained, I had no problem handing over the vinegar.
Every now and then we let her eat dinner in our room and watch her own show. One night last week, I took her plate in to her as she sat on our bed. “Ok. Now, remember, do not get this on my bed.” I stressed as I handed her plate over.
“I know. I know.” She responded.
“Can I watch YouTube?” She asked.
Before I could respond, she continued on. “Mom. If I am going to be a YouTuber, I have to watch and see what there is so I can be up to the challenge.”
Quirking an eyebrow at her, I wondered how long she had planned that little speech. “You can watch YouTube until I come back in.” I responded.
“Thank you!” She replied.
Who am I to stand in the way of her aspirations of becoming a vlogger?
Rowonna McNeely works with her husband, Aaron, at Willie’s T’s in the Art Department, regularly volunteers in the community, and has her hands full with her daughter, Kiera, along with three dogs, one cat and one hamster.
