Just A Little Human Dodgeball

Several weeks ago we were watching the Brownwood Lions play football when it was broadcast on television. As we watched the game it became obvious that we still have a little bit of work to do with Kiera when it comes to certain sports.

“Go Lions!” Kiera shouted from the couch.

I walked in from the kitchen to see her bouncing on the couch as she watched the football game. “What is that white line for?” She asked Aaron.

He began to explain about yards and second downs and all things football. She continued to watch while he tried to explain.

“So, it’s like dodge ball! Except you’re dodging humans!” She exclaimed excitedly.

“Well… yes… sort of.” I responded.

I settled in beside her on the couch to watch the game and listened as Aaron continued to explain different parts of the game to her.

As the other team ran for the end zone and scored, Kiera shouted, “They have a strike!”

I giggled and met Aaron’s amused gaze over the top of Kiera’s head. “It’s called a touchdown, baby.” I gently corrected.

Not taking her eyes off the game, she acknowledged me with a nod of her head. I have no idea if that little tidbit even sunk in.

A few nights ago, I asked, “What do you know about football?”

“Not a lot.” She replied, taking a sip of her water. Glancing up at me suspiciously, she asked, “Why?

She tends to be a little suspicious when we discuss sports, because Aaron and I think she would make a heck of a softball player. She has an amazing arm. But, we don’t push, we just mention it to her from time to time.

“I was just curious.” I responded, not wanting to let on that I was planning to write about our previous football conversations.

Squinting her eyes at me, she asked skeptically, “Are you trying to get me in football?”

Smothering a smile, I replied, “No, baby. I was just curious.”

“I’m not really a sports girl.” She stated as she turned back to her coloring page.

I understand, my princess. I understand.
