Be The Good

It was Monday morning and I was reminded of how… witty… my child can be. We were all almost ready to walk out the door. Aaron was outside starting the vehicles and I had just finished fixing my hair. I glanced in the mirror, checking my outfit one last time.

I had on black dress slacks, a white tee with a black and flowered cardigan over the top. I thought it looked fairly good. My mistake was in commenting about my outfit in front of my daughter… who is so much like her Daddy sometimes…

“I think this looks ok.” I stated, more to myself in the mirror than to the mini person standing in the doorway of the bathroom.

Kiera grinned broadly before remarking, “It looks like you’ve been abducted by the rainforest.”

I blinked slowly at my reflection in the mirror before turning to face my child. “Like I’ve been abducted by the rainforest?” I repeated slowly.

She continued to grin at me. “Wait.” She stated before turning and walking into her room.

I stood in the bathroom unsure what to expect next.

Kiera walked back into the bathroom doorway. “All you need is this.” She stated mischievously as she handed me a pair of blue plastic binoculars.

The wit is strong in this child.

Even though sometimes she pops up with crazy remarks, sometimes she says things that genuinely amaze and inspire me.

Several nights ago, I was putting her to bed. “Do you want to say the prayer or would you like me to say it?” I asked as I pulled the blanket up over her shoulders.

“I’ll say it.” She replied as she closed her eyes.

Now, a lot of the time, she says the same prayer over, but this night she said something that really stopped me in my tracks.

She started her prayer, thanking God for the day and asking him for a good night. Then in closing she said, “You should be proud of the people you made because most of them have good in them.”

I sat on the edge of her bed stunned into silence. I waited a moment, taking a deep breath as I processed her words. “That was a beautiful prayer, baby.” I said.

She whispered her thanks and snuggled under her blanket.

Most people do have good in them. Sometimes, it takes a little more for us to see the good. Some days we are all so busy that we don’t take that time to show the good that is in us. We focus on our day-to-day tasks, what we have to do next and we miss that opportunity to smile at some one we are passing.

Don’t miss that opportunity. No matter how crazy or hectic your day may be. That smile… that moment of good… may be what makes that person’s day.

Now, I have to go pick out my outfit for tomorrow. Something less abducted by rainforesty.
