Trudging Along

When is the last time you used or heard the word “trudging?” I love to read, and honestly it’s not a word I come across on a regular basis, but, I can pinpoint the exact moment that I have heard that word used recently in a sentence.

Friday evening, I was baking cookies for the NaNook & NaKoda’s Big Paws Rescue Bake Sale. Kiera had already expressed a desire to help once she had finished eating dinner.

Pulling the last batch out of the oven, I hollered at my child. “Kiera! Do you still want to help with the cookies?”

She bounced up from the computer desk, toy in hand and ran into the kitchen. “Yes!” She exclaimed excitedly setting her toy down on the counter.

After she washed her hands, I showed her how to drizzle the chocolate on the peanut butter cookies and then let her take over.

While she worked I began to wash dishes.

“I’m done.” She proudly exclaimed holding the bag of melted chocolate.

“They look perfect.” I responded, taking the bag from her hands and tossing it in the trash.

She went over to the sink to wash the chocolate off her hands.

Now, the toy that she had been playing with earlier was a small doll that resides within a ball. When she had come into the kitchen, she had placed it by the sink.

I walked back across the kitchen towards Kiera and the sink.

“Mom!” She exclaimed. “Look!” She pointed to her toy that had slightly shifted on the counter.

“It moved!” She said excitedly. “I think it was when you were walking.”

“You think so?” I asked continuing to walk around the kitchen, wiping down the counter and cleaning up our mess.

“Maybe you were trudging.” She stated. “Are you trudging?”

I stopped and turned to look at Kiera. “Did you just say the word trudging?” I asked quizzically.

Without even looking at me, she replied. “Yes. Now, were you trudging?”

“Umm… I guess?” I responded, staring in shock at the back of her head. “I guess…”
